Hey, forget the banks. They're expensive. The first time I tried that it cost me 12,000 yen.
Just go to one of the larger post offices and ask for a soukin form (remittance form), "kokusai soukin shita desu ga". They are available in English. This will allow a Post office bank cheque to be posted back to the intended recipient. Around 1000 yen.
